Winter Weather Safety

Winter weather in the St. Louis region can change quickly, bringing snow, ice, freezing rain, and dangerously cold temperatures. These conditions can impact travel, utilities, and personal safety. Preparing ahead of time and understanding how to respond helps reduce risk to yourself and others.

How to Prepare Before It Happens

  • Monitor weather forecasts and be aware of winter storm watches and warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
  • Keep a NOAA weather radio, mobile weather alerts, or trusted news sources available to receive updates.
  • Download and enable notifications on the WashU Safe App to receive campus alerts and safety information.
  • Prepare a winter emergency kit that may include:
    • Warm clothing, gloves, hats, and blankets
    • Flashlight and extra batteries
    • Boxed water and non-perishable food
    • Phone chargers or portable battery packs
  • Identify safe indoor areas where you can remain during severe cold or icy conditions.
  • Know the signs of hypothermia and frostbite, especially if you must be outdoors.
  • Prepare your living or work space for cold temperatures:
    • Keep indoor heat at a safe level
    • Allow faucets to drip during extreme cold to help prevent frozen pipes
    • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing
  • Wear footwear with good traction to help prevent slips on snow or ice.

What to Do During Winter Weather

  • Stay informed by monitoring weather updates and campus alerts.
  • Limit travel when snow, ice, or freezing rain create hazardous conditions.
  • If you must go outside:
    • Dress in layers, including insulated outerwear, gloves, and a hat.
    • Wear shoes or boots with traction.
    • Walk slowly and carefully on icy surfaces.
  • Be alert for symptoms of cold-related illness, including:
    • Shivering, confusion, or fatigue (possible hypothermia)
    • Numbness or pale skin on fingers, toes, ears, or nose (possible frostbite)
  • Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow. Take frequent breaks, lift small amounts, and stay hydrated.
  • Keep clear of snowplows, icy stairways, and untreated walkways when possible.
  • During power outages:
    • Use flashlights rather than candles when possible.
    • Avoid using generators, grills, or gas appliances indoors due to carbon monoxide risk.
  • Report power outages or safety concerns to:
    • WashU Police (Danforth, West, and North campuses): 314-935-5555
    • Protective Services (Medical Campus): 314-362-4357

What to Do After the Storm

  • Continue to use caution while traveling or walking, as black ice may remain after snow or ice events.
  • Watch for downed power lines, damaged trees, or hazardous conditions, and avoid those areas.
  • Report hazards, damage, or safety concerns to WashU Police or Protective Services.
  • Clear snow and ice from walkways carefully and use proper lifting techniques when shoveling.
  • Check on coworkers, neighbors, or community members who may need assistance.
  • Restock emergency supplies and review preparedness plans to ensure readiness for future winter weather events.
